Sony announced "Exmor R” CMOS Sensor today. According to Sony, it is twice as sensitive as conventional CMOS sensors thanks to back-illuminated technology that places metal wiring beneath the photo diode instead of above it. This allows smoother movement in action sequences and higher image quality in dark conditions.

 

 

 

“Exmor R” Sensor Optimizes Low-Light Performance

Conventional image sensor architecture has required wires and other circuit elements to be positioned above the light sensitive photo-diodes, limiting the imager’s light gathering capability. Positioning these elements behind the photo-diodes, Sony’s “Exmor R” image sensors can gather more light, resulting in approximately twice the sensitivity compared to conventional sensors.

 

When Sony announced development of Full-Frame 24.81-Megapixel CMOS Sensor in 2008 during PMA, Sony Alpha DSLR-A900 Full Frame was later unveiled.

So, are we expecting the following cameras very soon:

  1. 1. A950 with backlit 24.6 Megapixel Exmor sensor USD$2999.95
  2. 2. A850 with 24.6 Megapixel USD $1999.95
  3. 3. A750 with 14 Megapixel backlit sensor USD$1200.00
At the mean time, if you are planning to buy Sony Alpha DSLR-A900, wait for a while.
