This lens is able to use Sigma's 1.4x or 2x teleconvertor and achieve focal length up to 300mm at F5.6. Judging from the sample photos, the APO 50-150mm F2.8 II EX DC HSM should be a good walkabout telephoto lens in comparison with any 70-200 F2.8 lens as it weighs less than 800g.
A reader, Pablo was wondering if this lens is good for outdoor photos mainly focusing on nature and animals. For nature as in some landscape and waterfalls, this lens seems to be just right to do the job and would not burden one during a hike or trek but for animals, unless one is photographing large subject such as elephants or is very close to the subject, else I would not recommend this lens.Birding is almost impossible. Hope this helps. One of the good way to determine if this lens is for your general usage is to open your photo gallery and examine the focal length you commonly used, if it falls in between 50 and 150mm, should the price tag of $749 is not too much, then go for it. You may also be interested with the previous Sigma 50-150mm F/2.8 APO EX DC HSM at $599. Apart from being a street walkabout lens, this lens shall make it good for portraiture thanks to its constant F2.8 throughout its 50 to 150mm focal length, if you are one of those who like to shoot mostly 2/3 and above body crop. If one want to move around with a lighter setup, replacing the 70-200 F2.8 during weddings is recommended too.
